According to international standards, there are two distinct directions of doctoral studies at UNATC: scientific (arts research) and professional-artistic (practice-based research).

The four research areas in which the doctorate can be completed are: AESTHETICS, THEORY, PEDAGOGY AND HISTORY OF THEATRE APPLIED THEATRE STUDIES, CINEMATOGRAPHY AND MEDIA INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES THEATRE/FILM/AUDIOVISUAL

The doctoral school of UNATC "IL Caragiale", in accordance with the specifics of the institution, operates in the academic-artistic sphere in the fields of THEATRE AND PERFORMING ARTS and CINEMA AND MEDIA.

The doctoral school is the oldest doctoral studies structure in Romania oriented towards these fields and confirms the existence and practice of a formidable doctoral experience. The doctoral school within UNATC has represented a model for other Romanian universities with an artistic profile, at the level of the third cycle of university studies, according to the recommendations of the Bologna Process.

In respect of the professional tradition of honing artistic mastery and of learning, fixing, researching and artistic creation, the pedagogy and corresponding university practice confirm the relationship and direct collaboration between the teaching staff and students in all cycles. The university system of individual guidance is preferred in the training of people dedicated to the performing arts, film and media and falls within the traditional, artistic, educational and formative methodologies that pursue excellence in the respective fields of reference.

The notion of research, in the sphere of arts, in the fields of THEATRE AND PERFORMING ARTS and CINEMA AND MEDIA, is inextricably and organically linked to the act of artistic creation and contains profound aspects of a creative nature, including in the bordering sectors of the artistic process, respectively in the areas of thought, study and theoretical investigation. The doctoral approach within UNATC "IL Caragiale" directly involves the research and artistic creation side. Artistic creation, in turn, directly involves a continuous and maturely assumed research approach.
